Student Check Out
K-1 students may check out 1 book and keep it for 1 week. Students in grades 3-5 may check out 2 books for 2 weeks. Books may be renewed if not on hold for another patron. Magazines may be checked out as long as the student is checking out a book as well. Students must return any overdue items before checking out additional items. Reference books are housed in the media center to be accessible at all times to patrons. Students may come to the media center in small groups with a pass or for whole class check out.
Fees for lost or damaged books:
Hardcover book - $15.00
Paperback book - $5.00

Selection Criteria
Hopkins Elementary School Media Center shall use the following criteria for evaluating and purchasing all media materials. These same criteria will also apply to gifts to the media center and non-school owned materials (supplementary materials) that may be used in instruction.

Teachers wishing to use Supplementary Materials must follow the Approval Process (see the Hopkins Elementary School Media Center Approval Process for Supplementary Materials Policy).

- Provide a wide range of instructional materials for students which develop information literacy skills and encourage the pursuit of lifelong learning.
- Provide materials that will enrich and support the Academic Knowledge and Skills, taking into consideration the varied interests, abilities, learning styles, and maturity levels of the students served.
- Place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in the selection of materials of the highest quality in order to assure a comprehensive collection appropriate to the community of Hopkins Elementary.
- Provide students with materials that will motivate them to learn through the effective display of media materials.
Selection Criteria

- Materials shall support and be consistent with the system's mission, vision, and goals and the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum for specific courses.
- Materials shall meet high standards of quality in factual content and presentation.
- Materials shall be appropriate for the subject area and for the age, emotional development, ability level, and social development of the students for whom the materials are selected.
- Materials shall have aesthetic, literary, or social value.
- Materials chosen shall be written/produced by competent and qualified authors and producers.
- Materials shall be chosen that avoid gender, role, age, ethnic and other stereotyping.
- Physical format, medium, and appearance of materials shall be suitable for their intended use.
- The materials selected shall be purchased and used in compliance with current copyright laws
